Surfing School - Surfing - Turtle Diving or Turtling
Turtle Diving or Turtling is another method of getting through breaking waves as you are paddling out, usually better for those with longer boards as duck-diving is harder.
Essentially, when a wave comes, you hold on to the rails of your board and flip over with your board while pulling the nose down slightly. This way when the wave hits, you are not flipped backwards and up. The wave just goes right over you most of the time. Once the wave passess, just flip back over and keep paddling.
Sometimes this can be more effective than duck-diving, sometimes. It is also a lot easier to get the hang of than duck-diving.
