 Topic: Boardworks paint chip repair

Just got a used Boardworks AIPA BB stinger today and it has a fair amount of heavy paint chipping and scratching. It does look to be just cosmetic but I would like to get it fixed (Plan on keeping this board for a long time). Anyone know of a good place to get it repaired inexpensively.

Anywhere, all shapers know how to fix those now. If you want, my shaper has a repair partner at his surfboard factory:

if we're talking just paint chips and not dings , just take it to automotive paint shop . it acrylic enamel paint just like your car . they can do a simple rail job up to the pin lines . oh , by the way , keep an eye out on imitation future boxes that Boardworks snuck out . if the pin in the back comes out , the only option is to go single fin or glue the sides in .

acrylic enamel paint hasn't been used on cars in a long time.
big vehicles like ups trucks and buses still use it, but any good paint place won't recommend you paint your car with it.

yeah , agreed I think the new cars get Polyurethane now . but for the Boardworks , Surftech and other molded epoxy boards , acrylic enamel will be much cheaper .

You can't just paint over the chips. The paint on the board is in the gel coat. the outer gel coat can and will chip off when it takes a hit. It doesn't mean that the under coat of epoxy cracked. Your board is most likely still water tight, but check to make sure the under coat of epoxy is not compromised. The gel coat on these epoxy boards is brittle and easy to crack. I've got a few chips on mine just from laying it on the pavement or bumping a wall. It doesn't spider like a PU board it just chips off. When you patch it you can just use epoxy resin from a patch kit to smooth over the hole in the surface and then paint it with an epoxy spray paint. spray a few heavy layers of clear coat over the area to keep the paint from getting scraped off. The last patch I did to my gel coat was over a year ago and it's held up great.

Take it to a local shop, please support your local shaper.
Also, if you want to check with a pro shaper GLASSER ONE on this forum owns a surfboard factory and they do repairs, he'll be able to hook you up. Tim's a cool guy

Will do. I will contact Tim and see if he is in North County. My next boad will be a shaped locally for sure. I am still trying out shapes to see what works for me. Rundown so far
Costco sponge board-started for a year
Anacapa Bandit 7'6" bought 8/08 new and it works good in steeper waves but I do sink it if the wave is too small. Love the shape but is was made for people 180-210# (I am 245). I told surfride I wanted something I could duckdive. I am still fine with it but the waves are not always 4 feet and steep. $350 on sale at surfride
Plus One 8'4 epoxy quad. Kind of a gun shape. Skinny board, fair amount of rocker, really pointy board. Looks like a gun shape for a smaller guy. Still like the quad fin though and I would be fine if it was wider and thicker. I still completely sink that board under water. Had this board for about 10 months now but have not had it out too much. Craiglist $200
7s Superfish 8 foot quad fin. Thick and wide and flat. Wasn't too crazy about this board from the first time out. For some reason wide nose flat boards don't seem to work too well for me. I tend to pearl so that is why I like rocker and pointy boards. I think I often take off late and steep and feel confident with a decent rocker. $325 off Craigslist
Latest Board is an Aipa 8'4" BB stinger. Bought used and only out one time on it in small surf. I think this will replace the Plus one and 7S since it will catch anything, has good float and enough rocker. I will find out more tomorrow when I go out in bigger surf.
Next board will be a custom to replace the Anacapa. Maybe something like a 7'8" quad that is thicker and wider than the Anacapa. We'll see

but if we are just talking about paint chips and not actual dings where it goes into the fiberglass layers , i dont think the local surfboard factory is in the business or wants to "paint" epoxy molded boards made overseas . but doesnt hurt to call around .

Yeah, I have the exact same board, 8'4 aipa stinger by boardworks. The chipping outer color coat isn't something you wan't to spend a bunch of coin on having repaired by a ding shop. Show your support and buy a patch kit from them, but its just a matter of mixing some 2 part epoxy and spreading it over a chip in the surface. No cloth infolved.
As for the board, I weigh 230lbs and its definitely my favorite board year round. Its not great for 1-2 foot waves, but it will ride anything 3' to double overhead with ease. (I havn't had it out in anything much bigger yet) excellent preformer for a big person. Forget duckdiving it though... too much float to it. I can kinda duck it, but its not even close to a full submersion duckdive. Best to turtle it if the wave is breaking on your back.

Tim is down in south bay in IB. If you want one farther north call Micah at Addict surfboards, they are in sorrento valley, I posted the web link earlier.
They do have a repair shop, and yes they do ding and paint repairs. Sounds like a $50 job to make it look like new. There is also ding king in Encinitas and probably a handfull of others.

Yea I love the board. Went out at Sunset Cliffs today and it rode great. Get in early and it handles great. The pointy nose and decent nose rocker gives me confidence dropping in the steeper waves. Got 6 set waves out there today (never been there before). Paddling in at the steps I saw a guy break his board in half on the rocks getting out of the water right in the little cove at the base of the steps. Just as he was getting out a big surge shoved his board into the rocks and snapped it. Really felt bad for him. Made me a bit nervous getting out since I never did it before and the tide was kind of high but I made it out ok.

finger nail polish works great for chips, krylon works good for the big repairs, Its just spray paint, mask it and spray, wetsand and polish good to go
