Topic: Springsuit Unused - Rubber gets messed up? Posted: 05 November 2009 at 2:43pm |
I just bought a new springsuit as it was 65% off, O'Neil, 2mm Hammerhead.
I'm just wondering, if I leave it hung in my closet till May, will the rubber get messed up/loose? Will it lose its quality? I heard this once just wonderin if it's true
Thanks!

I wouldn't leave it hanging; the shoulders might get stretched out (although a spring suit is much lighter). I would loosely fold its legs over body, over a rolled towel, so the folds are not crisp. If you fold it tight and crisp like a shirt it will wrinkle - you want the fewest folds and as rounded as you can get them. Then, I put them in a large plastic storage container. Maybe this isn't the best way, but it's how I store my winter suits over the summer.
I think there is an old link about this somewhere....

hanging a full suit will pull the shoulders, especially if its on a thin narrow hanger. A spring suit on a big broad hanger should be fine for winter storage. Nothing wrong with rolling it up and storing it in a drawer either.

I assumed that if I fold it up, roll it up, it'll get wrinkled. I also heard if you hang it no matter full or spring the rubber stretches?? Or it loses it's strength or something?

Not if you hang it up already dry... if you hang a WET wetsuit up everyday to dry out it will stretch from the weight of the water in it. Suits are packaged and shiped from the factory folded up in a plastic bag. They are stored in the store on a rack on a hanger. A crease won't stay in a suit permanently and a dry suit doesn't weigh enough to stretch it out if its on a broad hanger. Go to a dive shop and look at the 7mm suits.. they're on hangers and they weigh a lot more than a 2/3 mm suit. When DRY, a wetsuit doesnt weigh enough to stretch it out if you hang it right. Since most people don't have the right hangers, or they hang them up wet, they end up stretching their shoulders.

thats how I hang my suit when I throw it over the shower door. Evenly distributes the weight on both sides of the hanger, and you have two layers of material that its draped across so the load is further divided.
