backstory:
doing research for a new DSLR camera i found a recommendation on where to get digital pictures developed.
also good for enlargements...

Costco...

i found the recommendation at kenrockwell.com
he said he gets his photos done there and enlargements up to 12"x18"
the one on morena near pb is where he gets them done.

so yesterday i decided i was gonna get one of my pics enlarged to 12"x18" just to see how good they were and also if my point and shoot camera can print that size and still look good.

so i go on their site and the 12x18 was only $2.99 so i got it made.
the best part, besides the price is it only takes an hour.
so on the way over there i stopped at the baras thrift store near sports arena and found a really nice 16x20 frame for $4
ran over to costco and got my print.
it looks amazing.
they don't print the photos, it's on actual photo paper.
put the pic in the frame and it looks so good. i can't wait to hang it up.
the frame was missing a way to hang it up.

so for $7 i've got a really nice work of art to hang up.
now i gotta find some other pics i've taken and clean them up in photoshop.

my camera is 7.2 mp nikon s50 and even with a magnifying glass you cannot see any pixels in the 12x18 print.

the pic was taken on macro mode with no flash. then i removed all the color from the pic and recolored in the flower.

picture was taken at balboa park or the san diego zoo back in 2007. i can't remember exactly where i took it, but i think it was over near the little artist shops in balboa park

oh and if you use their website to upload the photos, make sure you click the box for "full resolution upload" or else you can't enlarge that big.
if you shop at costco you can also order them at the counter then walk around for an hour. i don't shop there so i ordered them online.

i'm sure all the costco have the same equipment, but wanted to be safe and use the same one ken rockwell recommended.

yeah ken is a funny guy, i've read most of his website.

oh and make sure you get glossy.
for price reference walmart will print you a 12x18 for $8.86 and if you want glossy you can't get it in an hour.

Costco is great, I use them all the time for printing photos.  You can't beat .13 cents for 4x6's.  Another great option (if your not in a rush) is to upload them and have them shipped to you.  Standard shipping is free (at least on 4x6) and only takes a few days to get to you.

Mike,
Did you pick up a D40 yet?

no not yet, i'm slacking on selling my longboard.
i really don't see myself using it anymore, but i can't bring my self to sell it.
once i sell it i'm gonna buy the D40. or i might just wait and pickup the D700, D3, or 5D mk II

i've got enough stuff to sell on craigslist in my garage and room that i don't use anymore. so all of the above cameras are kinda in my price range.

i'll probably end up just grabbing the D40 till i can get rid of all my junk.
just wish the D40 had a higher FPS.

We recently got the D-90 with a second 300VR zoom lense. I am no camera guy at all since we had a point and shoot (nikon colorpix) and was real happy with that but my wife wanted the D-90 for our daughters soccer games. The D-90 is awesome and way beyond what I know about cameras. When I have some time I will post up to take surf photos of whoever wants any (free-just for fun so I can learn how this thing works)

yeah the d90 is a great camera. i would think about getting it, but for me it would be more cost effective to either get the d40 till i can afford the higher end camera or just buy the higher end cameras.
if there was no plans of becoming a professional photographer i would pick up a d90.

i wouldn't mind meeting up for some surf pics sometime.
maybe we can get a lot of the guys on the site together and get some pics taken. if you want i could add a watermark to the pics for you, if you don't know how. also i wouldn't mind buying some pics if any of me come out good.

It would be fun to meet up sometime with a group and get some pics (no charge just for fun-we'll just have to trade off on the camera time and surf time). I also have a Hi-Def camcorder. Time is my only constraint with kids soccer, work etc. I try to get out in the water once or twice a week if possible but there are periods of time (too many times) where I can't get in the water for a couple weeks but I am going to try and be in the water when there is a swell

Thanks!
