Topic: Wetsuit issue Posted: 01 November 2009 at 2:45pm |

I've just discovered the left shoulder of my wetsuit has thinned out to the point it's basically see through and water just drains right inside. The seams in the same area are leaking too. I bought the thing last year, it's maybe 13 months old and I have another suit I alternate with, so I'm pretty bummed as it was a Rip Curl G Bomb which set me back over $300.
I've written RipCurl, not with the higest of hopes, but it doesn't hurt. Does anyone think this is repairable? If so, where would be the best place to take it? Should I even expect a suit to last more than one season (the other suit I have is 2 years old now and doesn't have this problem)?

VegasMike, it was a brand new suit, new model for 08, which is when I purchased it. I'm going to take it in sometime this week.
I thought a suit should last more than one season. I take good care of them too.
I'll let you know what happens.

I took it back - RipCurl in PB. They thought it to be weird and are sending it away; it will be gone for 2 weeks or so. Staff there has always been very nice, but I think they can't do much until its been examined at Rip Curl's secret lair of wetsuit damage appraisal. They better do something because for the amount I wore it, it's seriously disappointing quality.
Either way I'm out my best winter suit. I have another, but it's a bit big. I'm going have to buy another suit in the next few days....
Anyone ever dare to buy a Patagonia?

It's too warm to be wearing a full wetsuit right now. However, if you insists on wearing one, you should have a backup. Big fan of redundancy of vital equipment.

Are you the guy I saw out there this weekend only in trunks? You made me wince lol. And yes, I do insist on wearing a full suit right now. I do have an okay back up, it's just a bit too big, but it's serviceable in a pinch. I'll buy a new 3/2 and make the RC in repair my alternate and hide the other if I gain 20lbs. You're right about having extra equipment.

Yeah I hang my suit out over the shower door in the afternoon and its dry by the next day when I need it again. If I leave it outside it may not dry under the patio if its a damp night. For a backup I got a springsuit... It incentivises me to make the repairs or purchase a new suit in a timely manner. Otherwise I'd put the blown out suit on a hanger untill my backup failed and then had two busted suits and nothing to wear. I make it a policy to have a backup.... I try never have a backup that will substitute for the primary though. I'm lazy by nature... must take countermeasures to battle nature.

fyi:
if you are planning on doing two sessions in one day or if you glass off one night and are gonna dp in the morning. you should hang your suit inside out. that way the inside dries first. if your suit isn't completely dry at least the inside isn't cold and wet.

Just an update - I got the call to pick up my suit. It was a brand new one!!! I'm feeling pretty good about it and feel well treated by Rip Curl.
