Topic: surfing beaches near UCSD Posted: 18 September 2009 at 5:48pm |
Hi Eevryone, im from the distant land of Australia
Im planning on coming to San Diego around this time next year for a 6 month stay, primarily studying at the University of California San Diego.
I enjoy surfing here in Aus and becuase i would be a poor college exchange student, im wondering if there are many good surf beaches around the UCSD campus and how far they are away
thanks

just down the hill... look on google maps.
You could walk/bike to either La Jolla Shores, Scripps and Blacks, 3 imho good spots to surf.

depending on what you mean by "good"
i don't think the shores or scrips come to mind when i hear "good surf spots"
Blacks is known to be a heavy big wave spot in the winter time.
if it's a good west-north swell blacks will be going off.
also there are quite a few good reef spots in la jolla
of course you gotta surf windansea since you will be in the area.

Go a few miles north and you'll have a decent reef break in Del Mar. Go a little further north of there, about six miles, and you have Cardiff Reef, Suckouts, Pipes, and Swami's.
South of La Jolla, you have Bird Rock, Windansea, and a couple spots in PB/OB.
'Course, I'm sure all of our standouts aren't ANYTHING compared to Aussie surf, but on a decent swell, they're still pretty fun. My buddy from Australia's actually visiting LA for a week in October and I was telling him the same thing.

thanks guys
yeh i mean id just be a poor international student, so transport wouldnt be that easy
im basically a novice-mediocre surfing wise, just some small breaks, 6 feet is great to me
so yeh anything in walking distance or a short trip from the campus would be sweet

i know what imho means.
and imho the shores is one of the worst spots in san diego county.
i know the title of the thread is spots near ucsd, but in his post he said "good spots".
there are a lot of good spots in australia.
for an example i'm going to post a picture of a spot in hawaii.
the guy that posted the pic said that the conditions were "junky"
just imagine if that is junk to hawaii people, what would they think about knee-waist high closeout/mush waves at the shores.
here is another
| Combo swells plus moderate NE trades made for some not-so-ideal conditions... conditions were a bit disheveled |
now if that is not ideal conditions and disheveled... wow
"good" means different things to different people. however imho when i hear "good surf spot" the last place i think of is la jolla shores.

i think sort of 6 feet is good, i have no idea wat expected so and information about the average swells at locations close to the campus would be good

What side board do you ride? i go to Shores for DP almost every morning and passes the UCSD junction.
If you want I can probbaly give you a lift one day so you can check it out for yourself.

most waves are gonna be 3-5 feet (cali scale), when we get swells they are good sometimes.
most of the time waves will be around waist to chest high. when the good north or west swells come in they will be over head.
i don't really know much about ucsd.

I'm not going to UCSD, but their nickname is University of California Socially Dead. or something along those lines. basically, a very academic school, with a poor social atmosphere, think nerdy Asians. Go to sTdsu to party when you're not studying.and dont get Triton eye I am transferring there to save money next year. Although i'd like to go to ucla or something, ucsd isnt as bad as my post sounds

UCSD is a pretty boring campus, and that's coming from a grad student, but it is an easy(ish) walk to Black's and Scripps, both solid winter surf spots.
If you want to party at night, you might wnt to think about living in Pacific Beach. Lots of bars & restaurants there, and PB Pier is definitely surfable. If you only want to surf and can swing it, another place to check is Windansea in La Jolla. It's a bit pricey and not too lively, but it's a good break if "6 foot is fine." UCSD has a free bus pass for students and it's about a 25-4f min ride to campus.

UCSD is basically what you make of it. You can't just sit there and expect someone to transport you to fun or anything. The problem with students calling it a boring campus is that most of them saying that ARE the nerdy boring Asians who just say it to fit in with the more socially outgoing kids. I mean, c'mon, you have an effing beautiful beach nearby, an absolutely AWESOME State Reserve to see, a few decent bars just a few miles away at PB, and an awesome bar in Porter's Pub right on campus, with a taplist that's better than most taverns I've been to. I don't know about you, but getting a pint of awesome craft brew right in the middle of a lab class = not boring to me.
I went to UCSD, and the few people who've trashed it and said it was boring as hell usually were pretty damned bland themselves, and had no idea what fun is.

Hey Bro, are you dissing my home break?! Don't make me throw down, Boy!
Seriously, though, Shores is a solid longboard break with some of the most consistent surf and most reliably good vibes in the county. In the winter when the NW swells come in, it's one of the best breaks around. That said, there's no shortage of folks surfing around here so it is best if all the wannabe pro surfers hit the wannabe pro surfbreaks and leave LJ Shores to us kooks.

If I want to chillax and hang out with buddies, Shores is awesome. I love the community feel you get there, and you rarely get any douchebags that think they own the spot. And yes, occasionally you'll get a NW that only Shores manages to catch, and the place turns into a crazy surf paradise. I can remember a few times last winter when I'd be at a reefbreak in North County barely catching waves with a longboard, and later in the day I drive down to Shores to see it absolutely exploding with double overhead waves.
I actually lost one of the fins on my thruster during one of those days, lol.

I was going to mention that Porter's has a nice taplist for San Diego microbrews, even the Round Table pizza has Stone on tap.
Note, however, that's the only thing on your list of entertaining pastimes actually on UCSD campus. You're not going to see any good concerts or plays at UCSD (as a science campus, there aren't many artists around). There's no sporting events to speak of (though lots of IM stuff going on). And while Porter's is nice, it's definitely more of a place you stop to pick up a brew between classes than a place you party on a Friday night.
That said, I can't imagine many campuses that offer a more fun undergrad experience. Surfing is all you really need to make yourself happy and you'd be able to form some good crews with the other students. PB is a great place to get-crazy-go-nuts and the 30 couldn't make getting around there easier. Loads of great stuff around UCSD, just nothing happening on the campus.
This stands in stark contrast to my East Coast undergraduate experience, where the city around campus was a sucktastic cesspool of boredom but the kids would get together and throw raves on campus.

the shores is just as good of a surf spot as the other hundreds of miles of beach break california has. however it's always got a thousand people on the sand. i'd rather hit up some spot between mission and pb.
got all the sand to your self and the waves are just as good (if you want to use that word) as the shores.
also there are a lot of beach breaks that are 100 times better than the shores.
i think the only reason the shores is as popular is cause of the easy access.
however you shores "locals" can keep thinking that the shores is a world class surf spot.

lol, world class surf spot. I like Shores because of the crowds, believe it or not. If I'm looking to socialize while surfing, Shores is where I go. If I want to just surf and be by myself, you'll find me in North County in any of the other, much better breaks. EDIT: And yeah, Che's still there and they put on some awesome shows every now and then. Saw a Lightning Bolt show there that completely rocked my ass off. I don't know, I just don't understand how anyone could get bored at UCSD when there's so many things to do around it. At least you're not at UCR, where all you have to do is eat really bad Mexican food and dodge bullets.

haha a btt overwhelming actually lol
i dont kind a few poeple around in the surf with me, as i would like to make some friends becuase of course when i go over there il know no one.
the free transport card seems like a good idea for students
i dont really know what to expect from life on campus as i would be living in a dorm on campus. I kinda want a good vibe and a good party environment and its hrad to tell from so far away and the fact that there is always goint to be different reports from different people
ive basically narrowed my choices down to ucsd and uc santa barbara. for the life of me i cant decide on which one as for me itsd such a big decision as once im over there, im there for 6 months, and id hate to be dissappointed
does anyone know much about each campus to provide a bit of a comparison. but yeh, i definitely appreciate all the input from u guys and will have to make a final decision very soon

UCSB is a TOTAL party school. Go there if you plan on not getting any work done and just getting hammered every night.

about 9 years ago i worked at a pizza hut at la jolla shores.
most of our deliveries were to ucsd, most of those deliveries were more than one pizza.
there were a lot of parties going on there at the dorms. however i have no idea if they were the "get drunk and pass out" parties or the "look at my new calculator" parties.
the drinking age is enforced, but only if you get caught

If you're living in the dorms, I hear they have routine inspections or whatever to make sure you kids don't have any contraband. Other than that, I don't think they ID at Porter's, I've never seen them do that.

While that's a tough choice, you'll be stoked at either spot. The surf/party is likely to be a bit more lively up at UCSB than down here at UCSD, but it will be colder. You'll probably learn more at UCSD, especially if you're into math/science, but that may not be exactly what you're looking for.
The drinking age here is 21, so you may well have a hard time getting served in bars/restaurants. I don't know about others, but I almost always get carded, whether at bars, clubs, restaurants, or concerts (I'm 33 and look ~40). My wife (who will always look like she's 18) has a habit of forgetting her ID when we go out and, on several occasions, has been unable to drink because of it. I'm not sure how it is in Santa Barbara, but I was surprised by how aggressively the drinking age is enforced when I moved from San Francisco.
Of course, where there's a will there's a way and you'll likely find the way, but it can be a bit of a hassle.
