Topic: Where do you guys keep your wax? Posted: 02 September 2009 at 2:56pm |
|
Like most of you, I'm going out damn near everyday, and wax is just one of those essentials everyone needs. But with hot weather like this, keeping it in the car can be a huge risk.
Just a week or so ago I remember trying to put my Sticky Bumps in a decently cool place in my car, but when I came back from a surf session it was still all soft and mushy, and created a bit of a mess in its "hiding" spot. And don't even get me started on that one time I tried out Sexwax and it basically left a puddle of wax in my car's carpet. What is it with Sexwax that makes it melt so much easier?
Anyway, where do you guys store your wax in your car? The standard seems to be a plastic baggie, but it'd be great to have something a bit more permanent. I'm thinking of buying one of those small Glad tupperware things and keeping my wax in there for storage, but if you guys have any better suggestions, I'm all ears.

Twee- I wax my board before I go to the beach, so when I get to the beach I just take the board out of the car and I am ready. One thing that you mentioned that caught my eye, that you use sticky bumps....I hate sticky bumps. I use famous and sexwax, the two best. I can't seem to get good bumps on my board using sticky bumps (no pun intended). And I think sticky bumps smears very easily. I've also heard good things about Mrs. Palmers wax as well.
What kind of wax do other surfers prefer?

i've been using sticky bumps since 1996, only time i used sexwax was back when i was younger and liked the name.
however i think back in the day sticky bumps was a north county thing. everyone i knew up in encinitas and carlsbad area only used sticky bumps.
go figure when i started surfing i used to ride in encinitas so i used sticky bumps.

I keep my wax in a bag inside a small black plastic toolbox. It never melts out of control.
During the summer I tend to not use as much wax in the winter. I just rough it up with a comb.

I have an old backpack that I turned into my surfing supply bag, the wax is in the small compartment in front, messy and sticky but nothing but wax goes there. The large compartment has bandaids, a leash, some rubber flip flops, some spare fins in case I crack one, a small leash chord...

Like I said, I've used Sexwax before, and regardless of whether it's for hot or cold water, it just melts way too easily. Last time I used it it basically came off all on the ass of my board shorts. One of my surf buddies also had the same problem, so I told him to switch to Sticky Bumps or some other wax, and he's happy with it so far. I think it's a bit easier to rough up with a comb as well.

I use sticky bumps. Maybe it is a north county thing, haha.. Never have a problem. If i leave the board in the car, it will melt a bit. If your car gets way too hot, throw it in a baggie or tupperware with some water in it. It won't melt with some water keeping it cool. I personally don't keep wax in my truck or take it with. Im with redheadedsurfer on that one. I wax up before i head out. :-)

Not NC, but I use Sticky Bumps, I especially like the Tour Series Cold, right now using SB, warm. I've tried Famous and Bubblegum, but end up with SB. I think it's the easiest to find, as well.
I keep my wax in a tupperware container, no issues.

I'm a sticky bumps guy. I keep it in a zip lock back and throw it under my towel in the car while I'm out riding. I rarely have issues with it melting in the car. But I usually surf early. :)

Yeah, of course I'm using warm right now. I remember when it started getting hot here, the first time I was out at the beach all of my cold wax from the Spring basically melted onto my feet and flaked off through the session.

LMAO!!! Sticky Bumps user as well. Kept in ziplock baggie that's stored in my make-shift surf kit (old shaving kit bag). Surf kit is kept in my trunk and I've had no problems with melting wax. I too, make sure my board is waxed prior to leaving home for a session.

Good luck with the sinus infection. In terms of the swell, glad I'm not missing anything since I'm now in Boise, ID. Can't wait to get back home later this week. Looking to do early DP this coming Thurs, swell or no swell. Just gotta get in the water.

I tried Bubble Gum surfboard wax, although super sticky it was way too gummy and watery. Might be better in the winter when the wax melts less. My favorites are Sexwax warm water, Ms. Palmers, and sticky bumps tour serious, although that one is also a little too gummy for summer use.

Yeah I haven't heard many good things about Bubble Gum.
lol, I just found out about Sticky Bumps Day Glo series, and now my fish is freshly waxed and has bright neon yellow bumps, like a tropical frog. Seems like it'll melt fairly quickly though.

in the Day-Glo box , most of it is Pink , like 40 bars . the least is Black with only 6 bars . at our shop , everyone wants the Black . heard all the Aviso guys want them for their black carbon fiber boards . we ask Sticky Bumps for a box of only Black , but they said assorted only . they are 100% natural Organic , so they dont last as long as their Petroleum counterparts .

Parrafin.
No, not really. I like Wax Research, which used to be called Surf Research, but it's tough to find. I do like Famous, and Sticky Bumps, never cared for Dr. Zogg's. Hard to believe that at one time we used to go to the grocery store for our wax...

If I don't remember any wax, I'll just ask any of the dudes in the parking lot if they have any on them. Usually they'll be cool and lend you some.

Upside down frisbee under the passenger's seat. It stays somewhat unmelted and won't make a mess. I also use a windshield sun guard to keep the heat out though. The wax probably won't be good to use after the car has been outside for along time in the heat, but it will be fine in the morning for a dawn patrol.

I use a tupperware tub. Eventually it morphs into a giant superwax block. I also start with basecoat, then a good layer of warm water wax bumps, followed by topping of the bumps with cold water wax. I know it sounds like overkill, but when I sit on my board, it rubs off the wax in the same place as my fat belly when I'm paddliing, which unfortunately is also where my foot goes. By using the overkill-multi wax technique, my the wax gets worn down but not bald-slick spots. I also try to keep the label around the remnants of the wax when im storing so I know which is which.
