Hey everyone,
I may have a chance to move to Santa Cruz and really don't know much about the area. Anyone have any scoop as far as the lifestyle there, the surf and the number of surf breaks there and nearby as compared to the San Diego area? Good or bad parts of the community to lean towards/avoid if I end up moving that way. I lived in OB for awhile super close to the beach and would like to find some type of similar situation up there if possible. Always great to get up early and just walk or jump on the bike to get to the break! I am aware of the much colder water and the shark situation. Not really digging that but oh well. Seems that I'll prob end up in Santa Cruz, Oside, or OB. Who knows? Thanks.

Thought I'd give this a bump and see if anyone wouldn't mind sharing some scoop on SC? Thanks.

Santa Cruz has a much different vibe than San Diego. Steamers is a world class wave, but when it is good, there are lots of nasty personalities out there. There are other breaks that are fun that are not as well known to the south. North of town a way there are some good breaks that get good waves Scott's Creek, Wadell, Davenport, when they are big they are pretty intimidating.   Santa Cruz seems to have a lot more low lifes who will smash your car windows to steal an ipod or slash your tires if you are not a local.   The surf culture is much more laid back in San Diego. Nobody cares what end of town you live in when you surf, not true in Santa Cruz area.

Hey Seadart... or anyone else,
Do you know any info on the diff parts of town in SC as far as finding an apt? Looks more likely that I'll be heading up there at least for a short period. Looking on CL it seems some say west side, downtown, seabright, etc. Not sure what a good part of town would be to find a pad in that's close to some surf as well as the bar/restaurants/shops? Or maybe a nearby town that would be similar like Capitola?

i'm not sure on any of that, but make sure you don't wear any UC Santa Cruz stuff or have any UCSC stickers on your car when you go surfing.
my brother went to UCSC for a few years (15 years ago) he had a UCSC parking sticker on his car. went surfing and when he got back to his car he had flat tires and a broken window.
it wasn't cause he was a kook either, just cause of the sticker.
go Banana Slugs!!!
The guys who can't catch a wave cause their board is Too Sweet.... they're the kooks.

Haha... I wish I was back in my college days. Oh the memories. Do you know any of the beginner/intermediate spots there? Better to play it safe for a bit before mixing with any of the regulars.
