Topic: Ordered new fish Posted: 08 May 2009 at 9:19pm |

My buddy Tim fell in love with my half moon quad fish, and it was my go-to board before I got my carbon fiber. It was shaped after the Xanady Rocky as an all purpose board and in works in most conditions, but since I have so many boards, specific to conditions, I stopped using it as much. So I sold it to him and decided to have another one made but more fishy.
This one the nose will be wider and thicker and the tail will be rounder and wider on the back with the half moon a lot smaller. Think of it as a hybrid between the Xanadu Rocky and the Lost Monkfish with a half moon in back, and the thickness, width and rocker of a classic fish. I think the last iteration was higher performance but I'm hoping it will be more of a wave hog while also being smaller, just in time for summer.
For sure it will look cool. Lets see. I'll post up picks later.

Well, decided to sell her and it's gone.
Turns out to be a wave hog, but I was looking for a high perfomance wave hog, which it wasn't. Good performance, good glide, good hold on steep waves, good turns, but I wanted super high performance, missed it by a little. Too used to my shortboards for this one, too bad, awesome board.
I lost a little money on it but the guy that bought it was stoked and it should be great, hes a starting surfer so it should be super stable for him.
Gonna re-order it thinner and epoxy, see if the extra lightness and thinness gives me the the same glide but higher performance.

Ordered the exact same board, but paid a little more for eps blank with epoxy resin. Gonna go 2 5/8" thick instead of 2 3/4", but for sure the same template, same exact specs other wise.
Added bonus: the shaper is going to prime the entire board including the stringer and then paint it. It will be solid green on the bottom to a yellow fade on the top, with no stringer showing. But, unlike chinese pop-outs, it won't chip since the paint will be under the epoxy. Kinda cool.
I'll post a pick next month when ready

Update: so I ordered the new board in August, when I visited my shaper in September it turned out he made it the wrong thickness, I wanted 2 5/8", he shaped it 2 1/2". So he ordered a new blank for me and shaped another.
However, so he would not get stuck with a shaped blank we talked and he will sell me the one witht the wrong thickness at a factory 2nd price.
Today they are done, picking them both up. Both at 6'1" half moons, one 2 1/2 with skinny rails and 5 fin setup and one 2 5/8 with tick rails with quad setup.
Will post pics...

Pretty much the same, except these are epoxy. The old one was fiberglass, and at 2 3/4" was heavy like, well, a fish. So you get the swooping turns of a fish.
I think the lighter weight will let me throw and snap it easier, so I get the same glide but with added performance, I hope.

Took out the 2 1/2 out today at oceanside harbor. The waves where super mushy and at most shoulder high. The light weight and stiffness of the epoxy make it very much like a biscut board, has great glide like a fish, but once on the wave it cut back and forth like a shortie , super snappy.
The G1000 on the tail are a little too big for the conditions, I like more glide on slopy days, will have to go buy some GX centers for it so I can switch back and forth based on conditions.
Still, love it, can't wait to try the green one.

The white one was a factory 2nd, so only $350, the green one $475, and the only reason they where so expensive is because both are epoxy, which is more expensive in matterials and set up, and both are extra fins. Still, not bad for a custom epoxy.
My shaper sells custom PU shortboards for $375, a steal!

Update: the green board is back at the shop, Micah is going add some pinlining, there where some small paint blemishes and he's going to do me good.
Today I got to try the 2 1/2 (white) board at OB with a couple of feet overhead conditions and I am very pleased with the bard, it held up nicely in the steep waves and it was super easy to get into them. Only one wave goof but I think it was just a closed out waves and not the board. I switched to the step up halfway throgh the session thinking I needed more hold and later wished I still had the fish since it was harder to catch the rolling waves.
I think the fish is more like the CI Pod hybrish shortboard than a traditional fish, it just feels shortboardish in the waves, which I dig. So far I've been riding it as a quad, thinking of switching the setup to a thruster. We'll see

So, like the white board, took it out under the wrong conditions, OB was big, 1 or 2 feet overhead but with big mushy takeoff's into big walls. It paddled better than the white one but was harder to duckdive, but man oh man it handled steepness with no problem. It wasn't barreling, but definitely steep and it did not slide out at all.
Happy with both, but I think I only need one, still thinking what to do...

much as I love the look of the green one, the white one has the option of a tri fin configuration. If I was about 40 lbs lighter I'd be making you an offer right now.

I think so, I might sell the white one since the green one is too preety.
Still, the white one performs better, the green one catches waves easier. I need to put a tail pad on the green one, might be why I think it doesn't perform as well.
Both are super light since they are epoxy, both have fish glide with shortboard performance, so totally stoked.
Need another week to decide.

Really like how the white one has just enough glide but easy to throw around.

Well,
I found the white one to be more shortboardish and the green one to be more "fishy" so far.
I'm gong to put a track pad on the green and the small back fins. If it handles like the white one then I'm selling the white one, if it still handles "fishy" then I am keeping both so I can enjoy the feel of both.

Final update: so tried them both with GX centers in back, and now both have a stomp pad and finally got to try them more-or-less side by side with the same equipment and under the same conditions.
They are very much the same except for two things, the white one being thinner is easier to duckdive but the green one being thicker is easier to paddle and get into waves.
Since the surf and perform about the same I think I will have to sell the white one, I was leaning on keeping the green one anyway because, well, it's much preetier, for sure I don't need two boards that perform the same. Plus, if I need to duckdive I probably should be using a shortboard anyway and save the fish for another day.
