there also seems to be a lot of missing posts. Are those going to be restored eventually or are they gone for good?

The database was restored to May 1, 2008 as we were hacked 4 times since that date. It has been a battle to lock down the forums but we are gaining on it. Thanks for your patience.

Any suspects? Who would want to do this?

A bad day surfing is better than a good day working.

I can no longer send Private Messages, upon submit a new page opens displaying the following;
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server error '80040e09'
The INSERT permission was denied on the object 'tblPMMessage', database 'surfdata', schema 'dbo'.
/forum/pm_new_message.asp, line 352
Is anybody else having this problem ?
Also for some reason whenever I open the new_reply_form to post a forum reply the text align is set to default centered.

I sent an email to the guy that runs the site to report the PM problem (I see it too). I honestly don't use it much, so I'm not sure when it stopped working.
As far as the center justified text, I don't have that problem unless I'm using their WYSIWYG editor. Here's how to switch to the old skool editor:
1. Go to Member Control Panel > Forum Preferences
2. Select "No" for the Enable the WYSIWYG post editor option
3. click the [Update Profile] button

Was there ever an answer?
It's been two years and Private Message system still throws the same error. The "The INSERT permission was denied" means the sites users have no insert rights on the table 'tblPMMessage', or the data base 'surfdata' is set to read only. Or worse...when setting up the user rights someone checked them all (on), including denydatawriter.

No, I never did get an answer. I think this is a result of the lockdown he had his programmer do after the last hacking incident. They didn't write the forum software, but they people that did weren't focused on security. To try to prevent more problems I think the site owner's programmer changed the rights the forum's sql account had. The code would probably have to be changed to work with these lower rights. I don't have access to the back end to confirm.
