Windy. Actually it wasn't bad at all for the short period of time I was there. Also got to see very close up some dolphins playing in the waves.

Bloody hell, if I thought the morning was bad, then the afternoon was a disaster - drove from Tourmo to Scripps and it was terrible... no surfing for me today :(

On windy days you have to hit it early before it starts to howl, I've actually hit Scripps at 6am with 15mph offshores and through the chop found some waves. Good luck in the wave search, I'm kinda hoping that all this wind will bring us some good local windswell

can anyone tell me how big the surf was today?
one of the sites i check was saying 8-10 feet.
i'm really confused on that cause it didn't look that big when i got the ob cam to focus on the waves for a few seconds today.

Ob was wierd.  There were lulls where the sets were only about 4-5 feet, but those only lasted a couple minutes before they were scraping the bottom of the pier again.  There was only one person out in the water on a surfboard in O.B. when I went down this afternoon.  There was no one else even on the beach with a board.  The waves were so tight together and that wind was blowing towards shore so hard there was no way in hell I was going to try and get out.  Maybe if the waves were good, but they were just giant slushy walls of scrubbing bubbles.  The tops were blowing down before the face even started to set up.  It was low tide and the outside break was all the way out at the marker bouy.   Going off Twee's earlier experience,  I went to tourmaline and it looked easy to get out... the waves were slower, spaced out, and smaller.  The wind still sucked and it was blowing the topps down at tourmo as well.   I'll almost always go out, just for the sake of getting wet.  It just wasn't worth the hassle today.  The only people in the water were kite surfers and wind surfers.  Maybe it will shape up by friday?

I went to check things out at Scripps this mid afternoon - sloppy, choppy, stacked up, crossed up with the occasional bigger set breaking  far out there. There were three surfers and I saw one catch an overhead wave and have a fun ride. They were only out there about an hour ( drifted from the pier to the Shores lifeguard tower in that time); it was so rough and windy.

The surf schools also went on business as usual?!

I've been surfing that damn pier for more than 25 years now and I never knew the hotel had a web cam on it.  Searched forever for an O.B. webcam but gave up a couple years ago. How long has that cam been up?

not sure how long the cam has been there, but i've known about it for a few months. the problem with that cam is people that don't care about the surf watch it. so sometimes it takes a few mins till you can control it.

session report for today.
ob
offshore winds, cold!!! water, big waves.
not sure how big the waves were cause i'm laying down when i ride. i didn't get to see any surfers catch anything. only 5-6 guys out the whole time i was out. saw one surfer drop in on one of the smaller waves as i was going over it. that was was at least head high.
all the waves i got felt like a couple feet overhead. nice long lefts for me, big drops semi steep shoulders for some nice cutbacks, but no lip tricks.
pulled into one barrel, but it didn't quite make it over the top of me. broke right on my head. some how i made it though the curtain.
only stayed out for 2 hours, got about 5 good waves. i am exhausted.
by far the biggest i've ridden in a long time.

the form started to get worse around 10 when i headed in. the bigger waves were starting to just close out. in the morning they were nicer form.

did i mention the water was cold? my jaw hurt for the first few duck dives
had 2 of the longest hold downs of my life. once when i got sucked over the falls cause i mis-timed my duck dive and the other when i got pitched off the top of one of the set waves.
tossed my board to the side and tried to break through the water clean, but somehow landed on my back. skipped once then the lip landed on me.

offshores were beautiful this morning, i love fall.

I was going to go out today but it's a half day for the kids at school so I got a bunch of stuff to do in very little time... hope it holds up for friday.  The wind has thankfully died off.   Glad you got some good rides.  I love it when it's big and you get those breath taking drops down the face.   Sorry to hear about your car.  I hate when that happens. (I have back up vehicles too...)

Much better today - still a  lot of white wash and it's a battle to get to the outside, but once out, there's a lot of ridable sets, I had fun and probabaly caught the biggest one I ever did - maybe a foot or 2 over head, took off late and rode the face all the way. Great.

where did you paddle out?
biggest wave i got today was a couple-few feet over head.
isn't it great. i'm so glad i went and got a smaller bodyboard. my old board would have been a little too big today.

oh and let me tell you guys, you have no idea how big those waves look when you are laying down on your belly.
it's amazing.

The lifeguard report is saying the water has dropped to 61. Geeze, that's around 5 degrees in a few days thanks to the icy swell from the north.

oh snap thats chilly.   I thought the air was cold today!    Well it's the price you pay for big waves around here.   It was my incentive to fix the heater in my samurai last year.

Near flat, clear, cold and kelpy at Scripps today.  Maybe 1-2' weak, soft weak ones for the most part.

It wasn't great, but Scripps was better than yesterday. Still small and soft for the most part, but with a bit more form; had some fun.

Amazingly clear water and leopard sharks.   I paddled with a school of a huge number of leopard sharks, I've never seen so many ... waves were pretty meager though... beats doing yardwork though.

Didn't see any sharks but spotted some stingrays today.

Small, but sometimes, pretty consisitent long rides at Shores today, the shape ain't bad. Paddled so much my shoulder is falling apart. Might take a break tomorrow.

Looks like the water temp has dropped a bit!  Anybody wearing booties yet?  Looking to getting a new pair (Oneill Mutants 3mm).

Yeah, it's getting chilly. For some reason I can't get used to booties - the extra few millimeters make my pop up go funny. And I can't quite 'feel' the board.

i wear booties, but they aren't for surfing.
they are so my bodyboarding fins don't eat holes in my feet.
i never really liked wearing booties when i surfed. too much grip for my tastes

I was at K5 and just happen to try some on.  Very nice fit and can see myself extending my sessions in the water in comfort.  Big%20smile  Vegas...I know what you mean with the fin socks/booties.  Many times they saved the skin on my feet during my bodyboarding days.

i used to wear a pair of booties when i would ride my longboard in the winter.
some split toe o'neill ones. no clue what model they were.
really liked them for when i had to walk on the reefs.

booties are great on the rocks... they fill with water and kinda suck for "feel" of the board, but when the temp drops into the low 60's high 50's its a necessary sacrifice if you plan on staying out more than an hour.    You can't feel your feet at all when they're frozen.
